Top Analog Compressor Plugins

Searching for the best analog-style compressor plugins out there? Look no further, Beat Lab is bringing you the list of the best compressors to use in your productions. Read Below. What Are Analog-Modeled Compressors? Analog-modeled or analog-style compressors are software plugins made to emulate the circuitry of their hardware counterparts. Hardware compressors are known for the musicality they add to signals run through them. Hardware dynamic processors are used to add character, depth, grit, presence, punch and/or warmth to your music. Those traits are what people are chasing when they talk about ‘analog’ sound. It’s a result of how the hardware is built. Physical circuitry is subject to degradation and over time certain processors develop sounds unique to their product line. Thanks to modern technology, developers are able to capture and recreate those characteristics found in classic analog hardware. This article will share with you the plugins recreating analog-style the …

MS EQ COMP – FREE Midside Compressor

MS EQ COMP – FREE Midside Compressor Internet Co. recently released a FREE mid-side equalizer and compressor plugin called simply MS EQ COMP. The plugin is available both for Windows and Mac OS platforms. It is a straightforward plugin in design and function which we’re quite grateful for, it’s part of what makes this such a quality plugin. The effect features a 3-band equalizer specifically for adjusting the center or the sides. If you aren’t interested in getting that type of processing you can link the modules in order to work in stereo by pressing a clearly labeled and easy to see button at the bottom of the plugin’s GUI. A bonus feature is a preset manager where you can save and recall your favorite presets. Internet Co. features this description on their website – MS EQ COMP can encode standard STEREO (left/right) signal to MS (middle and side) and add EQ …

ADHD – Free Tube Leveling Amp Plugin

ADHD – Free Tube Leveling Amp Plugin Audio Tools recently announced the release of their plugin ADHD, an emulation of hardware leveling tube amps, similar to the classic LA-2A Leveling Amplifier. Leveling amplifiers are typically associated with subtle compression for adding flavor and the ADHD stays true to form, it works especially well with a light touch. What sets this plugin apart from other leveling amplifier emulations? ADHD has an unusual amount of knobs for compressors of this type which gives you much more control over your compression parameters. On the interface, you will notice the classic VU meter smack dab in the middle of the plugin, next you may notice the typical two knobs for Gain and Peak Reduction. The developers of this plugin went the extra mile though and gave us controls for Attack, Release, Ratio, and Dry/Wet. These controls make it a much more flexible tool than the …

Set Up for Success – 3 Steps for a Simple Mixdown

Set Up for Success – 3 Steps for a Simple Mixdown Music producers (especially those of us just starting out) often see mixing as one of the most frustrating aspects of finishing their next track. The mix of a song can be responsible for making it a hit or leaving it lifeless. There are certain methods which are key to perfecting this craft so here are some factors that you need to keep in mind while working on your music: 1: Knowing What To Listen For If you’re anything like me, when you first started producing you probably had extreme narrow EQ boosts, tons of sub information from multiple instruments bleeding together, and sharp high end on a few of your instruments that “weren’t coming through the mix”. Honestly, that’s great. Why? It means you were making music and that’s goal for getting better at listening. It’s just practice. The more …

You’re Doing Too Much: Common Mix Mistakes

You’re Doing Too Much: Common Mix Mistakes We are currently in the middle of two weeks of advanced mixing techniques in our most advanced class here at Beat Lab, and it’s amazing how the more we learn about the process the more we keep coming back to the basics. The simplicity of the concepts of proper EQ, compression, and balance can make these tasks appear to be easy and we often feel we have grasped their importance before we really have. We have all been there and every part of this process of creating records from songwriting, to production, to mixing, and mastering is all it’s own endless rabbit hole so don’t be discouraged. If you feel your mixes still aren’t where you want them to be it’s possible all that is missing is the strongest possible foundation. From there there is often little work left to do. More advanced concepts will definitely …

4 Mistakes to Avoid When Compressing Vocals

4 Mistakes to Avoid When Compressing Vocals   I recently came across a great article by Rob Mayzes at The Pro Audio Files about vocal compression, and the common mistakes people make. The article simplified concepts that can often feel overwhelming. Since vocal compression is something I’m sure most of us could at least use a refresher on, I’d like to go over the concepts brought to light by Mr. Mayzes and include some of my personal experience as well. The vocal sound you are trying to achieve will vary by genre, but a cornerstone of modern vocals is consistency in level and clarity. Most of us recognize a compressor as the solution to this problem, but attempting to achieve a modern, punchy sound with a single compressor can often lead to over-compression. This leads us to our first common mistake:   1. Relying on Compression Alone Naturally, the human voice …

5 Tips For Getting Huge Drum Sounds

5 Tips For Getting Huge Drum Sounds   Grammy nominated and Spelleman Award winning audio engineer, Matthew Weiss, has blessed us with a few tips on how to get huge drum sounds. He clarifies that he is referring to the “huge” sound that fits with more rock, pop records that are using either acoustic drums or a live drum feel. However, his tips will inform any curious producer or engineer and understanding other styles can only take your skills to the next level. I’ll summarize his five points below.   Embrace The Space – to get character and energy in your drums you need to embrace the space in which you’re recording. Even if it isn’t acoustically perfect, it is working with those inconsistencies and quarks that will MAKE your sound. A controlled space can very easily sound dead and boring. Fake It If You Can’t Make It – if …
