Should I Buy It? – Arturia Pigments 2

Should I Buy It? – Arturia Pigments 2 Yeuda takes a look at the second version of Arturia’s original softsynth – Pigments. Arturia has always been known for its killer hardware and incredible synth emulations, so it makes sense that Pigments holds up the reputation. It’s a truly unique plugin that we were stoked to review. Watch the review video below, and read our rating breakdown below that!       Breakdown     Pigments is Arturia’s original software synthesizer plugin. It has a notably colorful design that lends to its highly visual GUI, hence the name “Pigments”. The interface layout differs from the last few next-generation softsynths we have covered while still maintaining a modular style. Next-generation software synthesizers all utilize enhanced oscillator voicing, complex modulation routing, and flexible mapping capabilities. Pigments stands in line proudly and takes a step forward with its own unique approach to synthesis.   …

Should I Buy It? – Kilohearts Phase Plant Review

Should I Buy It? – Kilohearts Phase Plant Review In this edition of ‘Should I Buy It?’ Yeuda takes on the behemoth plugin Phase Plant made by Kilohearts. Phase Plant is a modular synth that includes a huge variety of sound generators, effects, and modulation flexibility. It’s almost too much to describe with words, which is why we made a video covering it. Watch below, and read the breakdown below that.       Interface     The interface initializes empty as you have to add your own modules in the provided three sections. Overall it’s a clean look, easy to navigate and strongly serves the signal flow it was designed for. We love that it is scalable vertically and horizontally, it’s 2019 and that should be a standard in plugins by now. Functionally, it actually seems similar to Ableton instrument racks in that you can stack sound generators, assign …

Grandmother – Moog’s New Semi-Modular Synth

Grandmother – Moog’s New Semi-Modular Synth Gearheads rejoice! Legendary American synth builders at Moog have announced the release of a limited series synth called the Grandmother. The synth is a callback to the heyday of Bob Moog’s original lineup of synths from the 1960’s and 1970’s, it’s fully analog with no digital components for saving/recalling presets. The unit features modules for arpeggiation, sequencing, a spring reverb, an analog filter and an external audio input. External instruments can be routed through the Grandmother’s effects modules via that input. The synth has a relatively straightforward layout so those not typically inclined on pure analog won’t have too hard a time getting started right away. For all those sound explorers out there you’ll be pleased to interact with the 41 patch points on the synth, each of which can be routed to external Eurorack gear or Moog systems for further modulation. Moog’s Mother series …

VCV Rack – FREE Open-source Virtual Modular Synthesizer

The makers of VCV Rack have released the most recent update to the beta version of the open-source virtual synthesizer. VCV Rack was released earlier this year and has been receiving frequent additions to its lineup of modules. There are 14 modules that are included with the download as a group referred to as 'Fundamental'. These modules are, naturally, fundamental to creating a basic modular synthesizer and allow you to create increasingly complex routings for crazier sounds.

2020 – The Insane Semi-Modular Drum Sequencer App

2020 – The Insane Semi-Modular Drum Sequencer App There is an insane Kickstarter startup for a standalone, semi-modular drum sequencer, designed to create live, improvised compositions. Developed by Yotaro Shuto, an electronic musician who performs in DUB-Russell, a Japanese music group that creates all their own sounds with the Cycling ’74 Max software, and performs completely improvised computer sets. The roots of the 2020 are pretty clear in its layout, function and vision. On their Kickstarter page there is an outline of there two goals: to generate a million sound and sequence variations from a single idea, and to make entire beats in just one screen. From the looks of it, they’re on the right track, no doubt.   (2020 Grid Sequencer) 2020 is equipped with a clock, sample slicer, grid sequencers, 12 one shot samples and kick synth, 2 FM synths, external inputs / Higurashi generator, effect patcher, pitch transposer, 3 send effects, bus mixer, master effects, …

Palette – An Additive Controller

Palette – An Additive Controller   Palette Gear has been developing a photography geared controller system, which is also MIDI capable, that is structured in a completely original way. Palette works with a system of small, magnetic, add-on parameters, like knobs sliders, and arcade style buttons. The idea behind the project is to allow the user to be their own modular MIDI builder. Designed with a sleek finish and a receptive software called Palette App, Palette is an interesting controller system that minimize the excess in your controller options. Palette has four key components: the core, the dial, the button and a slider. The core is the brain of the group, enabling the controller to connect through USB. The dial is an infinite rotation dial. Palette is also equipped with a classic arcade style button, and a an ordinary slider. You are also able to color coordinate each piece, to help …
