Should I Buy It? – United Plugins Review In this week’s episode of “Should I Buy It?” Yeuda takes a look at five plugins under the United Plugins umbrella. United Plugins is a cohort oof plugin developers that banded together, they are – FireSonic, Sounddevice Digital, JMG Sound, and MeldaProduction. We’ve covered MeldaProduction’s products in the past on the blog, so this time we’re going at it with a new perspective. Watch the review video below, and read the breakdown below that. Breakdowns The first plugin we’ll break down is FrontDAW by Soundevice Digital. This plugin emulates analog channel strips with the intention being to put it in the FRONT of your effects chain. It adds a subtle saturation to your audio signal, which sounds pretty good. There are three different saturation models – US, British, German. Each model recreates the classic sounds from each country’s …Read More
Should I Buy It? – DS Thorn Synthesizer Review DS Thorn is a Spectral synthesizer plugin designed by Dmitry Sches (hence the DS before Thorn). Yeuda goes over the synthesizer and boy it seems amazing, we think you’ll be excited too. Watch the video review below, and read the walkthrough below that. General Interface Thorn’s interface leans heavily toward a utilitarian aesthetic, favoring skeuomorphic design (the knobs look lifelike) over the alternatives. This results in a plugin that looks cluttered with all the many parameters you are able to adjust, and a bit dated. One of the best parts of Thorn is that you can map every single parameter to a modulator! Unfortunately, the plugin lacks visualization of those mappings so it can hard to keep track of everything as your routings become more complex. What we have are five major sections of the plugin. On …Read More
LFO Tool Presets for Ableton Shaper To celebrate Ableton Live 10 release we’re giving away a free pack of presets for the new Shaper Max for Live devices included in Ableton Suite. The Shaper tool is a smart LFO that allows you to draw custom waveshapes to modulate anything. Simply click the map button and then hit any knob, fader or button you want in Ableton. You can even map it to plugins. This device reminded us the wonderful LFO Tool plugin from Xfer Records (makers of Serum). The first thing we did is recreated all the presets that are included with the LFO tool to use inside the Shaper. This will give you tons of Side Chain curves, modulation patterns and other experimental shapes to play around with. Try to map it to volume, filter cutoff, pitch, wavetable position, pan or anything else you can …Read More
SamplenHold is a new LA-based event for boundary-pushing performance artists hosted at Downtown LA hot spot, Resident. We are honored, grateful, but also not surprised our school's founder, Yeuda Ben-Atar AKA sidebrain, was asked to perform at the first SamplenHold event last Tuesday, July 11, alongside the likes of incredible talent like Amp Live, Josh Spoon, Portrait XO, and other special guests.
On SamplenHold's event page they described sidebrain as a "mastermind of multi-genre live performance and controllerism". He absolutely lived up to the hype. Using Ableton, a MIDI keyboard, and his famous Dreamcast controller - Yeuda threw down a set full of original loops, beats, and songs all while jamming out live with his controllers in masterfully creative ways. People we're feeling the heat and we can not wait for sidebrain to release some of the new material he was previewing.
