Tiny Desk Concert Contest – Open for Submissions   It’s that time of the year again, NPR is accepting submissions for their Tiny Desk Concert Contest. This is one of the biggest, friendliest, simplest, most supportive contests out there for independent artists. You should do it.     All you have to do is submit a video of you playing one original song (with a desk). Entries range form bedroom iPhone shots, to creative and well executed ideas. You can make it as tricked out or simple as you want. If you win you get to film your own Tiny Desk Concert in Washington, DC, and go on a nationwide tour with NPR Music. divider style=”clear” Why should you submit? A reason to release. This is the perfect opportunity to post a video of you performing your music. As artists we get in ruts and neglect to put out our …

5 Music Producers Killing the Game | Who Happen to be Female

5 Music Producers Killing the Game* *Who happen to be female. Whose your favorite male vocalist female producer duo? How about just your favorite female producer? No one comes to mind? This may not be surprising, as the beat making scene has historically been a boys club. The pairing of female vocalists and male producers is as prevalent as hi-hat rolls in a Drake song. The most up to date stats read that only 5-10% of music producer are female. And in fact, no woman has ever won the Gammy’s Producer of the Year award in a non-classical section (grr). This is not a reflection of the quality of work that women are producing, but the inclination of women to lean into (or be pushed into) performance roles instead of the technical ones. It’s a chicken and egg situation: women stay out of production roles because it’s a man’s world, …

Beat Lab Presents: Moldover, The Godfather of Controllerism

Beat Lab Presents: Moldover, The Godfather of Controllerism   Beat Lab Academy recently hosted a workshop featuring a man who has been regarded as the Godfather of Controllerism. A renegade in the game of electronic music, a genius of craftsmanship, and an extremely creative musician, Moldover came over to show off some homemade controllers, talk a little bit about the art of creating them,  and how to push the boundaries of live performance in electronic music. Controllerism is the term used to describe the growing scene of developing and creating homemade controllers. With the widespread use of DAW’s that incorporate the use of controllers, and the multitude of ways that they can be used, it was only a matter of time until very bright and creative minds developed ways to create the most suitable controllers for their styles.     Moldover, a mad genius of sorts, has been developing DIY controllers …
