RECAP – BEAT LAB & OUTPUT PRESENT: MUMUKSHU This past weekend we had another awesome workshop, this time we had a software developer and producer, Mumukshu lead us through the features of Output’s newest plugin – Arcade. Arcade is a loop based synthesizer that is connected to the cloud so it has an ever-expanding library of sound categories you can choose from. Mumukshu gave us an awesome rundown of the plugin and its core features. Beat Lab Artist Series Recap: Katherine Redlus This past weekend we had an another Artist Series workshop brought to you by Beat Lab Academy, featuring professional Harpist Katherine Redlus. Katherine went through the presentation by giving a bit of history leading up to today. She fell into Harp like many young musicians do with their respective instruments, an authority figure or guardian urges you into the practice. In Katherine’s case, it was her grandmother who wished to have a Harp player in the family so Katherine was granted that fate. Fast forward to high school, Katherine had persisted with the instrument and was quickly outpacing her peers. By the time Katherine headed off to undergrad university she had performed and mastered nearly every classical piece of music written for a Harp; that’s why she sought new frontiers to explore in college. Ableton Live gave her the new sense of direction …

Music Licensing Workshop Recap This past weekend Beat Lab hosted an awesome workshop featuring Brewhouse Music, a music company that has been hired for numerous licensing deals with some of the biggest names out there in advertising and film. The founder, Shy Goren, gave an excellent presentation on his history in the music business and his path to creating the behemoth of production that is Brewhouse Music. Shy’s story began with a promising music career as a popular band in Israel, convinced by industry professionals that his band was the next big thing he moved his operation to the states in hopes of pursuing the highest points of success…but, like so many others he had been falsely seduced. After a few years as an independent musician and producer and fruitless meetings with record companies claiming to want his music Shy and his business partner decided to respond to …

GateKeeper Workshop Recap: Polyverse’s Amazing New Plugin We recently had Infected Mushroom’s Polyverse come into Beat Lab to demo their new plugin – GateKeeper, a sophisticated gate plugin. What we saw was incredible and true to form for Polyverse which has a series of plugins each with powerful code under the hood that leads to impossibly fast and efficient processing. GateKeeper keeps in line with its volume automation, the primary ability of GateKeeper. The effect can be used for simple (but super precise) sidechaining or the effect can be used more creatively to instill complex rhythms into drum beats, bass lines, melodies, anything really! The workshop was an intimate session with Beat Lab community members and a few representatives from Polyverse present to provide information and take feedback while Beat Lab head-guru Yeuda Ben-Atar made beats and showed us the plugin in action. So let’s talk a bit about the technical aspects …
