Mammut – Insane FREE Sound Design Plugin

Mammut – Insane FREE Sound Design Plugin Swedish research center – Notam – recently released a plugin called Mammut which is a free sound design tool that can turn your sounds into total insanity. The plugin works on a frequency wide level so that any transformations made affect the whole spectrum, this way very specific minor or major changes be made to yield crazy results. The developer stated the following, “Mammut is a rather unpredictable program, and the user must get used to letting go of control over the time axis. The sounding results are often surprising and exciting. Mammut is also ideal for common operations such as filtering, spectrum shift and convolution and it provides an optimal performance.” Basically what you have is a frequency shifter and an EQ that can be used to warp audio into something far more mangled than the initial sound. You also have the ability to edit …

Fragments: A Max For Live Granular Synth

Fragments: A Max For Live Granular Synth   Fragments, the latest from Spektro Audio, is a Max For Live granular synth with tremendous potential for creating new musical ideas and new sounds. The 8-voice granular engine is designed to create percussive loops in glitch rhythms which means the sounds you get will vary greatly depending upon the sample loaded. Imagine an endless landscape of new ideas and sounds. The layout and functionality of the device is designed to be manual and intuitive so Fragments has capability for first-time users as well as the more advanced.   To get started, users need to load an audio sample or loop into the “Audio Sample” section of the device. For best results, Spektro recommends longer loops like drums loops or vocal phrases. The 8-voices of the granular engine can be sequenced via the built-in sequencer or played in via MIDI. Once a sample …

Field Recordings – Capture and Incorporate your Sonic Landscape

Field Recordings – Capture and Incorporate your Sonic Landscape   Shh. Take a moment to listen. You, my friend, sit in the nucleus of the infinite drum rack that is the soundtrack of your life. Surrounding you are limitless samples waiting to etch themselves into your tracks. Where to start. For one, if you have a smartphone you likely have a built-in recording app. You can also download an app which have more useful features for musicians. Try the Rode Rec app or Audio Memos for iOS for features like EQ, compression, and “extract markers”. While phones don’t have the best quality, they’re basically always in reach, and sound good enough. Make sure that you name the sound bit as soon as it’s recorded, otherwise you’ll get stuck finding “that one clip” from choices such as “New Recording 99” “New Recording 100” “New Recording 101”… you get the idea. If …

It has a built in filter and grain sequencer you can even record live input. Simply press “record” on the left. If the buffer is empty, make sure you resize it first to the desired length (in ms). Really great instrument that doesn’t require any MIDI notes to play because it’s based on playback mode and looping. You can come up with really interesting sounds in no time. And you can even drag & drop files!     Free from Maxforlive.com Check out his other music tools on his website and if you want …

Syntorial- Learn Synthesis, The Easy Way

Syntorial- Learn Synthesis, The Easy Way   Syntorial is a highly interactive program that helps you understand how synthesizer programming works. Syntorial directs their attention towards the effect of controls on sound, rather than the science of how the sound is altered, which really allows you to dive into sound synthesis. The program itself sort of works out like an interactive YouTube video. What’s great about Syntorial is how user friendly the program is once you learn how to navigate through it. The program has video explanations of the lesson that is split with an interactive section for application. You are given two patches; the hidden and user patches, which you alternate between, attempting to replicate the given sound under the hidden patch.   The videos, unlike YouTube, are very well paced and well articulated. I found the ability to pause and shift to the interactive section allows for quick learning …
